Education is essential. However, I mean that in the sense of learning and attaining knowledge. I do believe though, that the system in which it lives, is flawed. I hate the way society defines us by an alphabetic character on a report card.  I’m definitely no one to suggest how we should change the system, but I do know that the system requires change and here’s why.

Everybody is different. It’s a lesson we are all taught in school. That being said, the needs of people all vary when it comes to learning. Say what you will, but fact of the matter is, not everyone is going to flourish whilst learning within a “school environment”. I know many people whom are very intelligent, yet they did not achieve grades to satisfy the education system.

That being said, the psychological effects of the education can be quite hazardous. I should know, because I too have been affected. Some individuals definitely have the ability to achieve high results despite pressure from parents and teachers. However, a vast majority find it incredibly hard to deal with. As a result, their failures in school, tend to loom over them and further hinder any development that they hope to make in society. The worst part is, the system we are taught under is misguided when it comes to creating the “fairness” that it claims.

For example, I myself, did not do so well in my final year of high school. I had a near-perfect attendance record (settings aside sick days), I always handed my homework in on time and I studied whenever I could. Here’s where the problem starts.

In year 12, I selected the following subjects

• English
• Literature
• Media
• History
• Business Management

As you can see by my selection of subjects, Mathematics was obviously going to be a dead end for me. In previous years, I’d basically just managed to pass Maths, so I only felt that this was going to hold me back in my final year of high school. So what did I do? I chose every subject that I felt I could truly excel in. In an ideal world, I should have been able to achieve an ideal enter score to gain entry into university.

Sadly though, we don’t live an ideal world. We live in a cold world that is our reality. I had achieved steady grades throughout my final year in high school. I wasn’t the perfect student, but I was able to achieve consistent A’s, B’s, C’s, and most drastic cases D’s. However, the VCE system (Victorian Certificate of Education) is not graded on merit. It is all just one massive competition. So regardless of how high your grades are. They are not worth anything unless you are better than someone else. 

But it doesn’t stop there. Not only is it competitive, but in order to create “fairness” amongst it all, some subjects are scaled either “up” or “down”, according to the difficulty of whatever you had chosen in your final year. For example, subjects involving mathematics and sciences are scaled up, and vice versa. Now with all that being said, you can see where my problems had begun to arise. I knew that my choice in subjects were going to hinder me in future, but I never knew how much.

Tell me, where is the “fairness” that this system was intended to create? Why must people whom have made the choice to chase after what they want, suffer because it is different to somebody else? Yes, I understand that the other subjects could indeed be more difficult than others. But fact of the matter is, students should be able to choose the subjects that they feel contribute most to their future without having to fear losing marks, simply because maths and science is a “harder” subject. Who has the right to say what subject is harder? Everybody is different, therefore some people are more suited to other subjects.

For example, take two excellent students, both are at the top of their class in their selected subjects. However one is studying Biology whereas the other is studying Media Studies. Both students work exceptionally hard at what they do and achieve top marks. So tell me, why is it that the student in Biology benefits from having his mark untouched or possibly raised, whilst the student in Media Studies suffers because his mark is scaled down due to the fact the system believes Biology is a “harder” subject. And yes, it is probably true. But in the end, the other student chose to do Media Studies because he was passionate about it. So in the end, the student studying media suffered because he chose to “pursue his dream”. Isn’t it ironic that we are all taught to pursue our dreams as a child, only to be pushed down by the very same system in the end?

This scaling system is completely unjust. We are given the choice to study whatever it is we want. So why is it that just because a kid likes writing, he is to lose against another kid that likes solving equations? How can you compare the difficulty of one subject to another, when they both teach completely different things? Especially when every student is different and more likely to be suited to one over the other.

I myself, would’ve loved to pursue a university course to help me become a professional writer. As you can see, I’m very passionate about whatever I write. However, in my final year of high school, I achieved a VCE enter score of 48. It is a very poor grade and is nowhere near acceptable when aiming for university. I chose all the subjects that were most relevant to the course I was aiming for, so I thought I really stood a chance. I’ll admit, I wasn’t a perfect student. I definitely could have benefited from applying myself a little more. But I was surrounded by people, who would, a lot of the time, not even bother attending classes. And yet still, those people were able to achieve higher results than me. Why? Because they had chosen subjects that were scaled upwards. Whatever the circumstance, I know deep in my heart that I did not deserve that 48.

In our final days of year 12, we are told not to let our enter score define who we are. Which is absolute rubbish because the enter score defines our position in comparison to other students in the state.

I personally, found it hard to bounce back from having such a low enter score. It has actually dealt damage to my confidence when it comes to acknowledging the strengths. I constantly doubt myself, because of the end result of my VCE. When looking for a job, my mother constantly reminds me that I’m actually in possession of communication skills that many others wish for. Yet still, I don’t feel confident that I could fulfill the duties of the said role.

Education is important, but I feel that the way that is approached can truly be worked upon. The education system needs to be able to cater to kids whom don’t necessarily find it comfortable to learn within a school environment too. I am in no way, implying that I have the answers. All I’m saying is the system is in need of dire change.

I could honestly keep writing on this topic, but it’s getting late. I’m getting tired and I fear that what I’m writing is beginning to not make any sense.
